Let's DIY it! Pt.1 : Basic DIY Skills

This post is going to be a part of a much larger series of posts on DIY and mori fashion. I will update it from time to time with new DIY ideas for you to try!

The idea for this series came to mind when I noticed some people in the Mori Discord would bring up various pieces they wanted to buy, and I realized that each of these were easily DIY-able with very little skill needed. But I also know that while I was fortunate to have DIY expert parents who made most things by hand, a lot of people do not know where to begin when it comes to customizing their wardrobe. And so this series was born!

This first post not include specific DIYs, but will focus on specific skills you might need while DIYing, and serve as a point of reference. I will also outline the "levels" of experience you will see in each DIY post.

Levels

I've chosen three levels for these posts, and each post will have one of each so that anyone can try their hand at a project!

The three levels are: Newbie, Beginner, Intermediate

Newbie: You have zero experience with DIY, no special tools or skills. You're starting from scratch!

Beginner: You may have made something small before, and you have some basic experience with things like gluing, simple sewing by hand, etc. Your skills do not need to be refined, "correct", or even look pretty, as they will be covered up by the final project.

Intermediate: You have some experience with basic DIY techniques, skills like sewing/embroidery/knitting/crocheting at a basic level. You can create or alter something in a way that appears outwardly aesthetically pleasing and does not need to be hidden behind the alteration.

Various Technique Tutorials

These are some skills you may need when DIYing. These are not in any order, and I will link back to them in future posts so that you can have a reliable reference if you need any advice or tutorials.

Where to Buy Supplies

There is no one answer to where to buy your supplies for any DIY project. It will depend on your location, the types of supplies you may need, and more. I will specify for each DIY what kind of things you need, but here is a quick list of places you may want to check out when DIYing.
  • Craft Stores, in person and online, are a great place to find a lot of things you may need, like fabric, yarn, needles and thread, buttons, lace, glue, and more!
  • Hardware stores are a great place to find adhesives, and occasionally other craft supplies
  • Thrift shops are also a great place to check! You can find old clothing pieces to use as scraps, find old odds and ends like buttons, yarn, lace, and more. You can also use old sheets or blankets for fabric.
