A Beginner's Guide to Mori Kei (2025 Edition)

Image
It’s 2025. You turn on your computer, and through some streak of luck, stumble across images for a J-fashion style called “Mori Girl”. You’re so excited. This is exactly the kind of fashion you’ve been looking for, and you’re instantly in love. But tragedy strikes. You go to google for more information and you are instantly inundated with reblogged pinterest photos with no sources, articles of questionable quality from fast fashion brands that seem to say a lot without saying anything meaningful, and blogs that haven’t been updated since 2015 at least. Has this happened to you? Well fear not! I am here to give you a guide to getting started with mori kei in the years since its decline in popularity. If you are new to the style and feeling lost, this guide is for you! And if mori is old hat to you, maybe you can find some interesting tidbits here as well. Let’s get started! The Little Things: Incorporating Mori Things into a Busy Life

Image
As many of you know, I moved to Japan around a year ago. It was a wonderful move and a true dream come true for me, but such a big move has meant a lot of changes in my life. The biggest two are a busy schedule and a professional dress code, both of which mean I don't have much time or energy to wear mori fashion like I used to.  However, just because you're busy doesn't mean you can't enjoy mori fashion or lifestyle in your daily routine! So today I want to share a few small things I do to make my everyday life feel more mori. Maybe, if you're also busy like me, you can enjoy some of these things as well! Clothing 1) Wear forest colors and neutral palettes: One of the things that makes mori stand out as a style is its natural, forest-y color palette! And luckily enough, it's easy to incorporate these colors into any outfit. Simply swap out your bright colors for some mossy greens and soft floral colors, or trade in your blacks and greys for some browns and cre...

Mori Kei Activities for Summer

Image
Summer is finally here, so it's time to finish out my mori kei activities posts with some appropriate things you can do for the season! Go berry picking Berry picking is both a fun activity and you get something yummy to eat afterward as well! You can go picking at a local farm, plant your own berry bushes to harvest from, or even go foraging in your local areas. Make sure to research what types of berries you can and can't eat before foraging though. Picture Source Walk barefoot in the grass I'm not a believer in "earthing" or anything like that, but I do have to admit that walking through the grass in the summertime has its own sort of magic. There's nothing quite like kicking off your shoes and enjoying a walk through the grass. I'd highly recommend doing it! Picture Source Try out Hama Kei  Hama Kei is a sister style to mori focused on the sea. And what better time to try out a seaside version of mori than in the summer...

Mori Kei Activities for Spring

Image
Spring is here my deers, so it's time to look at some more seasonal activities! I set this series aside for a while due to being busy, but at the request of a follower, I'm picking it back up again for this post. This is my favorite season, so I'm pretty excited about this list, and I hope you enjoy it as well! Fly a kite There's something truly magical about flying a kite in the air! It feels so nostalgic to me as well, as I often used to fly kites as a child. Plus, it's a great excuse to get out in nature and find a beautiful place to fly your kite. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even make your own kite to fly. You can find a tutorial on how to make your own kite  here . Plant a garden Spring is the perfect time to get started on a garden. Whether it's a windowsill garden or herbs, or a garden made up of potted plants, or an elaborate vegetable garden, gardening is a fun and relaxing activity perfect for a mori spring. I personal...

Is There Really Such Thing as a Mori Lifestyle?

Image
A common discussion amongst mori folk these days seems to be whether or not there is a mori lifestyle. When I first joined the community, I would have been someone who said there was. In fact, I even wrote a blog post about it . But while I still somewhat agree with what I wrote in that post, I now have a slightly different opinion regarding the topic. I do still believe that there are lifestyle aspects that fit in well with mori kei. Things like loving nature, and enjoying the small things in life. Even some more specific things, like mori-esque music and mori hobbies, like sewing or hiking. Everything I mentioned in my post I still think fits well with mori kei. But even though there are these things that fit into the mori " aesthetic" , if you will, they by no means make up requirements for having a "mori lifestyle", nor are they required to even be considered a "mori person". In my personal opinion, there is no need for a mori lifestyle becaus...

Mori Kitchen Adventures: Pumpkin Bread

Image
The other day I was in the need of some good, homemade pumpkin bread. So I put on my vintage apron, and got to work making some! Here is the recipe (from Better Homes and Gardens): 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup packed brown sugar (I substituted regular sugar since I was out of brown sugar) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger or cloves (I used ginger) 1 cup canned pumpkin 1/2 cup milk 2 eggs 1/3 cup shortening (I substituted butter) Optional ingredients: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup raisins Heat oven to 350 degrees, and in a large bowl combine 1 cup of the flour, the brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, nutmeg, and ginger or cloves. Add pumpkin, milk, eggs, and shortening. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed till blended, then on high speed for 2 minutes. Add remaining flour; beat well. Stir in nuts and raisins. Pour batt...

To Live Like a Mori Girl

Image
What is a Mori Girl? An obvious question I suppose, but when people ask it, just how do you answer? When I first became a forest wanderer, I would simply answer "Oh, it's just a Japanese fashion style." But as I've grown in my Mori self, I've come to realize it's much more than that. Mori Girl is most definitely a lifestyle choice. As much as I choose in my life to be a Christian or to be conscious about what I eat or say or do or what I wear. So, what does this lifestyle look like? The official Mixi list has a few points on this: Loves fairy tales. Girlie-girlie. Loves to hang loose/chill at cafes. Loves to take a walk with a camera in a hand. Before you know it, you would be shopping from one small shop to the next. A collector, having a habit of collecting things you love. Feel happy when you find cute books at bookstores. You get excited when you shop at a furniture store. A girl with pure and clear air (or longs to be one.) You were told...
